About the book..

Everything nineteen-year-old Karina Mitchell knows about death changes the instant that she and her best friend, Rainey, are shot. For one, souls don’t die. They cross over. Only, Rainey’s soul hasn’t, and her ghost is hell bent on haunting Karina.
When Karina begins her sophomore year of college and moves into the apartment that she was supposed to share with Rainey, she learns a few shocking truths from her mysterious and gorgeous blue-eyed neighbor, Eli.
One: Karina has been chosen to become a Beckoner—an immortal conduit of the dead who helps safely guide souls to the other side.
Two: She’s the reason that Rainey’s soul can’t cross over—Rainey followed her back from death and missed her window to be at peace.
Three: Eli is hot. As in swoon-worthy, to-die-for, will-make-you-forget-yourself hot. And it turns out, Eli is a Beckoner, too.
Despite her attraction to Eli, the decision to become a Beckoner isn’t an easy one—it would mean giving up her own mortality … her own soul. But if she doesn’t, her best friend will be left to suffer an eternity at the hands of the evil Ceptors, dark creatures that feed on the souls left behind. After all, it’s her fault Rainey is haunting her.
Time is running out, and Karina needs to decide: Are love and loyalty worth sacrificing her soul?

The Interview..

Hi Cindy!! Thanks for stopping by on the blog!! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? 🙂
Hi, Paula! Thank you so much for having me! Hm…so a little about me….I’m a mother of three boys, a wife to one awesome man, and a reader, who loves to write. Oh, and I’m also the manager of marketing and a senior publicist at Spencer Hill Press/Spencer Hill Contemporary. My plate is super full, but my heart is too.
Beckon Me has such an interesting premise. Can you share with us how or where you got the idea from?
Thank you! The idea for BECKON ME actually came to me while I was washing dishes about 6 years ago. I saw Eli first, and then I saw Karina. The story has changed a lot since that first day, but the main characters have always been strong voices inside my head.

Describe your book in 5-7 words for us..
Life, Death, Choices, Love, Forgiveness

How did you decide your novel’s book cover? If you’ve given the chance to change it, will you? (It looks really pretty!! :D)
My cover designer (Jenny Adams Perinovic) was extremely patient with me! I had a very strong sense of what I didn’t want for this cover, but no real ideas for what I did want. I think we ended up going through over 35 (maybe more!) drafts before finally finding this perfect one. As soon as I saw this image, I just knew it was the right one. I really don’t think I would change it if I could. I am kind of in love with it. I love what Jenny did with it!

Do you think you can be friends in real life with your main character, Karina? Why?
Yes, definitely. I am a very loyal person and I would be able to connect with Karina in that way. I also think I’d have a lot of fun with Gabby.

Can you share something weird, funny or even a scary thing that happened while writing Beckon Me?
When I was drafting BECKON ME, I was a very active book blogger. I was reading a book by a debut YA author and absolutely fell head over heels in love with the story. I wrote this super long, fangirly email to the author telling her all the things I adored about her writing and the storyline. A rather unlikely friendship grew from that original email, and now, 6 years later, that author is one of my very best friends and she’s a critique partner of mine. She’s been an absolute rock for me and I’m so thrilled I “met” her the way I did.

What will readers expect from Eli. Can you share 2-3 quirks that Eli has which you think we’ll love 🙂
Eli can be…challenging at times. He’s secretive and cocky and has all kinds of good reasons why. I hope that readers enjoy unraveling his story.

Are you working on something new already? Do you have a WIP that you can tell us about?
I am working on several ideas at the moment. First is the sequel to BECKON ME, that I am hoping to release in August. I also have a few YA titles I’m working on with my agent. As soon as I have more information on those, I’ll definitely share.

Thanks again, Cindy for the Q&A! We’re excited to hear the playlist that you’ll be sharing with us! Scroll down for the tracks. (SPOILER: They’re all awesome)

Twilight meets Eleanor and Park in this contemporary romance story about a love that insists on forever.

I currently live in England. My days are spent in the Project Management field while my nights are spent with books. I’m either reading them or writing the ones that I want to read. My favorite things and in this particular order are books, Korean dramas, ice cream, and people who smile through everything. I consistently tell people that these are the four things they need to be happy but do they believe me?
No! Well I believe me, and you should too.

The Interview..

Hi Omoye! Thanks for stopping by on the blog!! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? 🙂

Thank you for having me. Well first things first, I never knew I was going to be a writer.  I grew up reading practically any book that I could get my hands on, and more than the escape that they gave to me, they also gave me the desire to dream. The exposure that books give you is one of the most priceless gifts that anyone can get from them, but that is if they’re open enough to receive it. It makes you believe that the world is your oyster, and that mindset is the beginning to a fulfilling life without boundaries. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Estate Management from Covenant university in Nigeria, and currently, I’m undertaking my postgraduate studies at Lancaster University in England. ‘The Beginning of Never’ is a contemporary romance novel but really, my favorites are historical romances. I’m fascinated by the lifestyle of people from centuries ago. One more thing, I love Korean dramas. Their stories I find are the ones that are able to capture my attention more than any others in the world. There is a honesty, and richness to them that leaves the greatest impact on me. I think they’re absolutely amazing.

Many novels are inspired by a single question. Was there one that sparked The Beginning of Never?

Yes! I read all sorts of books but my favorite books would always be the ones that have some romantic element in it. However, I understand that sometimes the love stories portrayed in these books are not realistic, and are so different from what we actually see happen in real life. Books all talk about the ‘falling in love stage’ of any relationship, and while that is wonderful, it is not the whole story. In fact, in real life, that is the easiest part of the story, and unfortunately for most people, the best part. So the question I wanted to answer in ‘The Beginning of Never’ was this: what would happen if two people met and swore that they were never going fall out of love with each other?  And what were the actions that they would take to ensure that their love never ran out? At the beginning of the book,I wanted to find the answers to these questions, and so far I’ve gotten some very wonderful answers.

Describe your book in 5-7 words for us.

Unique, Intense, Honest, inspiring, Entertaining, and captivating.

How did you decide your novel’s book cover? Which, by the way, is very gorgeous!!
Thank you. Well the cover designer tried all sorts of themes to best capture the essence of the novel, but we couldn’t find the perfect one so we decided to go with something simple but yet different. The Magenta color of the cover is one that I haven’t really seen on a lot of books so we decided that that would be the best fit for it. You’ll completely grasp the feel of the image when you read some certain scenes in the book. ‘No spoilers’. All in all, since we couldn’t complicate the cover, we decided to make it simple but different, just like its story.

How would you introduce your main character to us?

The main character in this book is Lenora Grace Baker and to me, she represents the essence of teenage turbulence. But one thing she isn’t is insecure, because she’s been through too much in her life to be. She is unhappy, but her pure-heartedness and bravery is one that will make her grow on you. This is the girl you’re introduced to: a careless, and short-tempered girl who believes that the best way to avoid pain is to avoid people. But as the story progressed, my greatest joy was to see her transform into a more self-less, brave and happy person. It made me fall completely in love with her and I’m sure you will too. If I were to compare her to a real life character, I’d say that the girl that represents Lenora, in both looks and attitude is Lorde. She’s a sixteen year old musician from New Zealand.

What is the best and hardest parts that you wrote in The Beginning of Never?
The hardest part for me was chapter nineteen, because it captured the essence of the novel’s message. So I had to write and rewrite it countless times. The best parts for me were definitely the romantic scenes because of how pure and unbelievably intense they were. Writing them brought goose pimples all over my skin.

What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on the Sequel to ‘The Beginning of Never which is entitled ‘The Way to Never’ and will be out by June or at the latest, early in July.

What are your three current YA favorites?
Hmm, believe it or not I don’t have any favorite books. I’ve always tried to consciously pick some and although some stories do stick with me, I’ve never had one to completely fixate upon as a favorite. I do like the the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer, and basically, any historical romance written by Julie Garwood.

O.E Boroni told us that she can’t listen to music when she writes because she needs all of her concentration and music doesn’t give her that. However, Lenora listened to songs, because they gave her an escape and calmed her when it felt like her world had become too dark. And here are some of the song in Lenora’s playlist..

Bravado by Lorde
Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel
Yellow Flicker beat by Lorde
Team by Lorde
Stay by Rihanna

The Interview..

Hi Daniel! Thanks for stopping by on the blog!! 🙂 Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Sure! I’ve been writing for quite a while (professionally, for about 10 years), but this is my first novel. I’ve written a lot about pop culture and music in particular and I got interested in telling a story about the area where I live and the music scene that flourishes around here. I’d also written a lot of book reviews and I think that was helpful in writing this book, because I’d thought a lot about what works in fiction.

Many novels are inspired by a single question. Was there one that sparked You’re the Kind of Girl I Write Songs About?
I definitely wanted to write about music fandom and the huge role that music plays in these characters’ lives, how it inspires them and consoles at different times them when they need it.

Describe your debut, You’re the Kind of Girl I Write Songs About,  in 5-7 words for us.
Exciting, sexy, funny, real, music-obsessed.

How did you decide your novel’s book cover and title? Which, by the way, are both fantastic!!
Thanks! The title was the first thing I had and I think it really set the tone for the book. With the cover I wanted to avoid having pictures of the characters’ faces because I prefer the reader picturing the character for themselves.

How many novels did you write before You’re the Kind of Girl I Write Songs About won you an agent?
This is my first novel and I don’t have an agent!

It is obvious that your book will have a huge music aspect, what kind of researches did you do?
I didn’t do any extra research just for the novel, which is one of the good things about writing about what you’re passionate about. I listen to a lot of music and go to watch a lot of bands and I like reading about music history. I just feel passionate about supporting the music scene and I think I’ve got a lot out of it over the years, so if people say they discovered a band they love because of something I wrote, I consider that a win.

What are your three current YA favorites?
Stephen Chbosky ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’
Melina Marchetta ‘Looking for Alibrandi’
Tim Tharp ‘The Spectacular Now’
