Just like any average seventeen-year-old, Twig loves her family. She has a caring mother and a controlling father. Her brothers and sisters are committed to her family’s prosperity… All one hundred eighty-three of them. Twig lives in the Family, a collective society located in the rainforest of Costa Rica. Family members coexist with values of complete openness and honesty, and they share a fear of contagious infection in the outside world. Adam-their Father, prophet, and savior-announces that Twig will be his new bride, and she is overjoyed and honored. But when an injury forces her to leave the Family compound, Twig finds that the world outside is not as toxic as she was made to believe. And then she meets Leo, an American boy with a killer smile, and begins to question everything about her life within the Family and the cult to which she belongs. But when it comes to Family, you don’t get a choice.

Hello everyone! Today, Marissa will be on the blog to introduce usher wonderful characters from her novel, The Family! Let’s get to know them all 🙂

What a great assignment – writing character profiles for my book, The Family. Thank you for having me today!

You’re welcome, Marissa! Can’t wait to know them.

The Family is set in a sinister cult in a remote region in Costa Rica. Most of the members are expat Americans.

Twig – The heart of our story. Twig turns 17 as the story opens. She’s an artist living in an oppressive, dangerous society. She’s sweet, smart and we see just how strong she is as her world falls apart around her. She also super fun and game. Life outside the cult looks pretty damn interesting…

Avery – Avery, Twig’s mother is living with untreated bipolar disorder. She’s narcissistic, wounded, isolated and extremely withdrawn. She’s Michelle Pfieffer (back in the day) gorgeous and she’s the only mom Twig has.

Adam – Adam is the cult leader. He’s charming, magnetic and profoundly charismatic. He’s crafty. He’s handsome and almost impossible to resist. He’s extremely dangerous.

Doc – Doc is the Family’s doctor. He’s an older psychiatrist (the oldest member of the Family), and he is creepy! He’s blindly devoted to Adam and will stop at nothing to protect him. He’s smart and manipulative – the perfect right hand man.

Leo – Leo is the boy from America with the killer smile. He’s smart, articulate, sexy and fun! He’s got groove (and an insane music collection) and his family is the stuff of dreams. He surfs and he is head over heals for Twig. He’s not afraid of Adam.

Gran – Gran is like the fairy godmother of the story. She sort of lives out of time in the book as a recluse in the rainforest. She has saved Avery’s sanity. She has a wardrobe that Gwyneth and her Goopigans would kill for.

Hope I’ve given you a good idea of the cast and characters of The Family, and I hope it entices you to give it a read. Thanks again!

When your life is a lie, how do you know what’s real?
Alexandra Gastone has a simple plan: graduate high school, get into Princeton, work for the CIA, and serve her great nation.
She was told the plan back when her name was Milena Rokva, back before the real Alexandra and her family were killed in a car crash.
Milena was trained to be a sleeper agent by Perun, a clandestine organization from her true homeland of Olissa. There, Milena learned everything she needed to infiltrate the life of CIA analyst Albert Gastone, Alexandra’s grandfather, and the ranks of America’s top intelligence agency.
For seven years, “Alexandra” has been on standby and life’s been good. Grandpa Albert loves her, and her strategically chosen boyfriend, Grant, is amazing.
But things are about to change. Perun no longer needs her at the CIA in five years’ time. They need her active now.
Between her cover as a high school girl—juggling a homecoming dance, history reports, and an increasingly suspicious boyfriend—and her mission in this high-stakes spy game, the boundaries of her two lives are beginning to blur.
Will she stay true to the country she barely remembers, or has her loyalty shattered along with her identity?

Welcome to my stop for the Alexandra Gastone tour! There’s a new spy on the block!! Read my review and find out why you have to meet this girl!!

“For the blood of the fallen. For the blood of the living. For Olissa we fight.”

Heck yeah!! What a badass book. Have you ever read a book that while reading it, you just have that strong feeling… that feeling that says ‘YESS THIS BOOK SHOULD BE A MOVIE’ It was like I was watching a film throughout the book, and I can’t take my eyes off the screen.

Whether she’s Milena or being Alexandra Gastone, its clear that I love this character, I remember this love towards a character before, it was when I was reading Vampire Academy and I was obsessed with Rose and I don’t want anything in life but to be friends with her. Yep, that’s what I feel towards Alexandra or ‘Lex’. Her thoughts and emotions is very genuine and I don’t think there was a time in the novel when I was frustrated or annoyed by her. Nope, all I have is pure admiration. I can’t even put myself in her shoes because, well, I don’t want to. She is battling with the question LOVE OR DUTY?

The plot was so intricately done. It all seems so real that even a hint of doubt didn’t creep in. It was so obvious that T.A.MacLagan researched this concept thoroughly. Her characters are all well written. There were turns and twists that I didn’t see coming. There was a right amount of drama balanced with action and romance that affected me a lot. They Call Me Alexandra Gastone is such a smart book. Its definitely a new series to watch out for!!!

T.A. Maclagan is a Kansas girl by birth but now lives in the bush-clad hills of Wellington, New Zealand with her Kiwi husband, son and four pampered cats. With a bachelor’s degree in biology and a Ph.D. in anthropology, she’s studied poison dart frogs in the rainforests of Costa Rica, howler monkeys in Panama and the very exotic and always elusive American farmer. It was as she was writing her ‘just the facts’ dissertation that T.A. felt the call to pursue something more imaginative and discovered a passion for creative writing. They Call Me Alexandra Gastone is her first novel.

Q: What was your inspiration behind writing this book?

A: I wanted to do a book about forbidden love, and what could be more innately forbidden than a demon and an angel? The idea grew from there. I wanted to show that Grace and Josh complete each other and that there are too many shades of grey in this world to make almost anything an absolute. I knew it was going to be tricky, despite avoiding religion as much as possible, but I wanted to make sure in my world it was about perception, belief, and choices and there was no simple answer to the ultimate questions. Frankly as soon as I started writing Josh and Grace took over and did what they wanted, which I know is hard to understand if you aren’t a writer! But hopefully that translates to them feeling just as real to you as they do to me.

Q: Do you think Josh and Grace belong together?

A: Every relationship goes through ups and downs, but I wouldn’t be a good writer if I didn’t do my best to put them through the worst. If they can stay in love after all I throw at them then YES! They deserve eternal love.

Q: Did you have an “aha” moment when you came up with this story?

A: My biggest “aha” moment when writing Soul Crossed was during a very important scene in Josh’s apartment when Grace is ready to be with him. I had the book planned fairly well in my head but realized as I typed that the book was going to wrap up far too soon. I didn’t know what to do, so I thought, just keep going and you can revise later. Writers always revise so it wasn’t so crazy a thought. But what happened was Josh surprised me! He reacted in the opposite way I expected him to and it was perfect. Subconscious at work? Maybe. All I know is I love it when my characters surprise me because hopefully they do the same for you! Did I revise? Heck yeah. But that important moment stayed and still fit perfectly. Can you guess what it was?
