About the book..
Tim’s a young singer-songwriter with a guitar case full of songs and dreams of finding an audience to embrace his tunes.
Mandy’s obsessed with music and a compulsive dreamer. She’s longing for something more fulfilling than daytime TV and cups of tea with best friend Alice, something like the excitement and passion of rock ’n’ roll.
When their eyes meet at a gig, sparks fly across a crowded room and hope burns in their hearts.
But in a city of millions and a scene overrun with wannabes, can they ever get it together? Will Mandy’s nerves doom their romance before it even starts? And where does the darkness in Tim’s songs come from?
This is a story of Sydney’s Inner West, of first love, crush bands and mix tapes; of the thrill of the night and what happens when the music stops.
Set in the cafes pubs and dives of Sydney’s Inner West YOU’RE THE KIND OF GIRL I WRITE SONGS ABOUT is a ballad to that time of your life when you are trying to work out who you are, what it is you want and what will it take to get you there.
Hi Daniel! Thanks for stopping by on the blog!! 🙂 Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Sure! I’ve been writing for quite a while (professionally, for about 10 years), but this is my first novel. I’ve written a lot about pop culture and music in particular and I got interested in telling a story about the area where I live and the music scene that flourishes around here. I’d also written a lot of book reviews and I think that was helpful in writing this book, because I’d thought a lot about what works in fiction.
Many novels are inspired by a single question. Was there one that sparked You’re the Kind of Girl I Write Songs About?
I definitely wanted to write about music fandom and the huge role that music plays in these characters’ lives, how it inspires them and consoles at different times them when they need it.
Describe your debut, You’re the Kind of Girl I Write Songs About, in 5-7 words for us.
Exciting, sexy, funny, real, music-obsessed.
How did you decide your novel’s book cover and title? Which, by the way, are both fantastic!!
Thanks! The title was the first thing I had and I think it really set the tone for the book. With the cover I wanted to avoid having pictures of the characters’ faces because I prefer the reader picturing the character for themselves.
How many novels did you write before You’re the Kind of Girl I Write Songs About won you an agent?
This is my first novel and I don’t have an agent!
It is obvious that your book will have a huge music aspect, what kind of researches did you do?
I didn’t do any extra research just for the novel, which is one of the good things about writing about what you’re passionate about. I listen to a lot of music and go to watch a lot of bands and I like reading about music history. I just feel passionate about supporting the music scene and I think I’ve got a lot out of it over the years, so if people say they discovered a band they love because of something I wrote, I consider that a win.
